A preliminary agreement reached between the Sandy Springs, Ga.-based shipping giant and Teamsters Local 2727 will give aircraft mechanics annual raises of 3.3% over the next three years and increased pension contributions. It is subject to ratification by about 1,700 ordinary members.

"This guarantees our members good wages for the next three years, good health care and an excellent pension," said Timothy Boyle, president of Teamsters Local 2727. "We think this is a very good deal for our members."

According to Boyle, the contract extension agreement between UPS and the union was reached after about eight months of negotiations. The current contract runs through November 1, 2023, and the extension will extend it through November 1, 2026.

"Our aircraft maintenance professionals are critical to helping UPS do what matters. Our customers depend on safe and reliable aircraft that connect customers and communities around the world," UPS said in a written statement. "We are pleased to have reached an agreement that continues to reward our maintenance team members for their contribution to the company's success, while ensuring that we can provide excellent service to our Air Express customers."

Aircraft mechanics make up a relatively small portion of the company's workforce of more than 500,000. Of the approximately 1,700 maintenance technicians and related employees who work on the company's jet aircraft, hundreds are based at the company's Louisville Air Center and about 40 are based in Atlanta.

That's separate from the massive Teamsters contract, which covers about 350,000 drivers, package handlers and other workers. The Teamsters have threatened a possible strike by workers in the UPS package division, although negotiations will not begin until next year.

Flight mechanics have a separate contract and, as part of the airline, are subject to different labor laws than other UPS employees.

Working conditions for airline workers, including UPS flight attendants, are governed by the Railroad Labor Act, which applies to both airlines and railroads, which are vital to the nation's transportation infrastructure, and limits the right to strike more than the broader National Labor Relations Act. These restrictions could make it more likely that unions will agree to a deal, as the railroad unions did to prevent a national strike and the UPS aircraft mechanics union.
